サイの角 コカイン価格に匹敵

アフリカとアジアで横行するサイの密猟であるが、英デイリーミラー紙によれば、サイの角の価格は今やコカインの価格に匹敵するそうだ。野生のサイを殺し、削り取られた角から得られる違法の粉は１キロあたり£31,000（約４００万円）相当になる。サイの角はもはや金の値段に勝る。
サイの密猟はインドからケニアまで広がっているが、特に南アフリカで急増している。昨年、南アフリカだけで３３３頭のサイが犠牲となった。そのうちの１０頭が、IUCNのレッドリストで絶滅寸前と定められたクロサイ(Diceros bicornis)であった。現在その数は４０００頭と言われている。
サイの角はアジアでは伝統的な薬として何千年も使用されてきた。しかし、科学的な研究によれば、その医学的効果は立証されていない。サイの角はケラチンから大部分が生成されており、ケラチンは人間の髪の毛や爪と生成する物質である。
生息地の減少に並ぶ深刻な問題である密猟は、インドサイ、クロサイ、スマトラサイ、ジャワサイと、これまで生息していた５種のサイのうち４種を絶滅に追い込んできた。現在スマトラサイの生息数は２５０頭以下となった。ジャワサイにいたっては５０頭に満たない。

In total South Africa has over 20,000 rhinos.

(07/02/2010) Despite a number of scientific studies showing that rhino horn has no curative properties, supermodel, entrepreneur, and recent host of Britain's Next Top Model, Elle Macpherson, says she ingests powdered rhino horn because: '[it] works for me'. In an interview with The Sunday Times via Twitter, Elle Macpherson says the illegal substance tastes like 'crushed bone and fungus'.
